Citizens Beware: Jury Scams

Hernando County Clerk of Courts and Comptroller Seal

Sadly, a Hernando County resident was recently the victim of a jury scam, just as a reminder, the Jury Services Department will NEVER send you any correspondence or call you requiring you to pay a fine for failing to report for jury duty. We DO NOT have that authority. Only a Judge can impose a fine for failing to report for jury duty. Per Florida statute 40.23(3) Any person who is duly summoned to attend as a juror in any court and who fails to attend without any sufficient excuse shall pay a fine not to exceed $100, which fine shall be imposed by the court to which the juror was summoned, and, in addition, such failure may be considered a contempt of court.

Anyone who encounters a jury duty scam, or any other type of fraud, can also file a complaint with the Florida Attorney General’s Office online at MyFloridaLegal.com or by calling 1(866) 9NO-SCAM.
